Introducing… BLACKMILL
Blackmill first came to my attention when Dubloads uploaded his track ‘Evil Beauty’. His chilled out style of Dubstep really is beautiful, perfect for a Sunday morning. Despite being very relaxed, his tracks are deep and edgy. This guy is fast becoming one of my favourite producers. Here’s the man himself…
Name, age, location?
Robert Card, 19, Highlands – Scotland.
How did you get into music production?
‘I got into music production after reading a car magazine which featured FL Studio. Without hesitation I purchased FL Studio and over time self-taught my way around the program. Trance was one of the first genre’s I got into but after two years I moved onto Dubstep. I loved the energy from Dubstep and thought I could combine it with the melodic aspects of trance, hence I’ve called it “Melodic Dubstep”.’
Which producers influence you?
‘I’m very open minded when it comes to music and to be honest I love all music that makes you feel a certain emotion. If I were to narrow it down it would have to be Bob Marley, Mt Eden and Bar 9. I try to be original as possible when creating music to create my own sound for people to enjoy.’
What inspires you to create music?
‘A lot of things inspire me to make music, it can be as simple as seeing the sunset to a past memory of my childhood. All of my music is captured from my emotions and what I feel at the point in time when I’m inspired.’
Which of your tracks is your personal favourite (and why)?
‘Although I’m new to this genre and I find I’m still progressing with each track, I’d have to say my personal favourite would be ‘Rain’ as it was my first ever attempt at making Melodic Dubstep.’
What have you been working on recently? Do you have anything due for release soon?
‘I’ve been on holiday for the past few weeks but I’m working on future tracks for my album ‘Reach For Glory’ which will be released mid February.’
Any shout outs you want to do?
‘I’d like to make a shout out to my brother Stuart who will be designing under the Blackmill name. Also I’d like to make a shout out to my best mate Andrew who will be Directing videos for my music.’
‘Peace and love to all.’
I’m going to start with Blackmill’s biggest track, a remix of Ellie Goulding’s version of ‘Your Song’. It’s an absolutely brilliant track, far better than the original in my opinion. He’s kept a lot of the vocals and added an incredibly smooth bassline to create a beautiful tune…
Next up is ‘Evil Beauty’. This was the first tune I heard by Blackmill and the reason I asked him to do an interview for me. I liked the fact that this was so different to most other Dubstep out there and I thought it would be cool to give you guys a taste of the more melodic stuff. I love the vocals, they make the track really atmospheric…
Next is ‘City Lights’. The use of vocals again is spot on. The track is so relaxing that you could almost fall asleep listening to it, in a good way though, by no means is it boring..!
Last up is ‘Reach For Glory’ which I can only assume will be the title track for his forthcoming album. I tried to pick out a word to describe the intro, “Oriental” popped into my head and then almost “Reggae”, but to be honest it’s neither. It’s something individual to Blackmill and it’s brilliant…
